Welcome to my Mapping Freedom REU (at the University of Southern Mississippi) weekly blog. Mapping Freedom is the first-ever digital humanities REU, running this summer of 2025 from May 27th to July 18th.

This blog is dedicated to posting weekly updates relating to my progress in my research and digital humanities project through Mapping Freedom, which will culminate in a final presentation on July 17th during our end-of-program research symposium. The final project, paper draft, and presentation itself will be linked on this blog by the end of the program.

Mapping Freedom draws on the Civil War and Reconstruction Governors of Mississippi Project (CWRGM) and its vast and diverse collection of digitized letters. Over the course of eight weeks, we will use programs like QGIS to develop a digital humanities project, focusing on emancipation during the era of the Civil War and Reconstruction. We will attend workshops, lectures, and field trips to round out our research.  All participants are funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the University of Southern Mississippi (USM).
